Shippensburg, Pa. - No. 1 Millersville received brilliant starting pitching performances from
Brandon Miller and
Cordell Shannon Friday at Shippensburg. Miller worked a three-hit shutout in a 3-0 opening game win while Shannon tossed nine shutout innings before receiving a no decision in a 2-1 extra-inning loss.
Millersville (37-4, 19-3 PSAC East) extended its winning streak to 14 before Shippensburg rallied from a 1-0 deficit with back-to-back RBI hits in the 10th. Miller (8-1) has now pitched six or more innings in nine of his 10 starts and has allowed just one run in his last three starts totaling 21 innings. Miller struck out six and did not walk a batter. He retired the first 11 batters of the game, giving up the no-hitter on a Dalton Hoiles single in the fourth. All three of Ship's hits were singles.
Millersville gave Miller a 1-0 lead before he took the mound.
Dan Stoltzfus hit a sacrifice fly in the first that scored
Dan Neff. Millersville's 1-0 lead remained until Stoltzfus drove in another run in the seventh.
Tyler Webster added a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
Chas McCormick went 3-for-3.
Shannon, making his first start in his hometown, matched Miller's exploits in the nightcap. He gave up just six hits over nine shutout innings, pitching two innings past his previous career-high. But Ship's Andy Crum stymied the Marauders. He allowed four hits and three walks over seven innings after giving up 13 runs in his previous three starts. He then handed the ball to Thomas Schwartz, who despite giving up the go-ahead run in the 10th, earned the win with three innings of work.
With no score in the 10th,
Ted Williams reached on a walk, advanced on a bunt single from
Tyler Orris and moved to third on an error. Stoltzfus drove in his third run of the game with a sac fly. But the lead didn't last. With
Mike Mock on the mound for the save opportunity, Shippensburg received a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Cash Gladfelter tied it with a single to center, and Matt Marcinko walked-off with a double.
With the loss, Millersville holds a four-game lead in the PSAC East standings with six games remaining. The Marauders can clinch the division Saturday with two wins. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
