West Chester, Pa. - For the second time in as many games against PSAC East rival West Chester, the third-ranked Millersville Marauders mounted a dramatic comeback to extend their winning streak to 22. Trailing 3-2 entering their final at bat, the Marauders suddenly built a three-run lead on
Dan Stoltzfus' two-out grand slam. The Marauders held on for a 6-5 win in the opener. But the Marauders' streak was finally snapped in the nightcap. West Chester used an 13-run fourth inning to win, 19-8.
Amidst the doubleheader action, Marauder catcher
Mitch Stoltzfus recorded a hit in both games, pushing his hitting streak to 23, tying a Millersville record that was set by Mike Van Gavree in 1990.
Millersville (23-2, 7-1 PSAC East) fell behind 3-1 when a fielding error opened the door to a three-run third for the Golden Rams. Starter
Jim McDade (4-0) kept his team in the game, though, retiring 10 of 11 batters before he exited after the sixth. His counterpart Nick Stallings, who shutout the Marauders in the 2015 NCAA Atlantic Regional, held that two-run lead into the sixth, but Millersville cut the deficit to one when
Jeremy Musser plated
Chas McCormick with a sacrifice fly.
Millersville was down to its final out after three batters in the seventh.
Dan Neff extended the inning with an infield single and McCormick was hit by Stallings to load the bases. With the bases loaded an two outs, Stoltzfus swatted a grand slam to center field--his third homer in four games.
West Chester made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh against freshman reliever
Mike Mock, who had not allowed a run in his eight appearances. Mock sat down th efirst two batters but a single and throwing error later, the tying run was at the plate. West Chester added back-to-back singles to cut Millersville's lead to 6-5. With the winning run on first base, Millersville turned to
Matt Ulrich, who promptly struck out Robert Knox for his first save as a Marauder.
McDade scattered six hits over six innings, allowing just one earned run without walking a batter for his fifth consecutive start--a streak of 31.1 innings. McCormick reached base four times and went 2-for-2 with two runs and a RBI.
Mitch Stoltzfus pushed his hitting streak to 22 with a double in the seventh.
Millersville's historic run came to a close in game two. After building a 6-0 lead with a five-run first and a solo homer from
John Brogan in the third, the Golden Rams erupted for 13 runs in the the fourth. Millersville ran through four pitchers in the inning and gave up more runs in that one inning than it had in an entire game all season. It was the most runs allowed by the Marauders since 2010.
Millersville tried to battle back, scoring two runs in the fifth. M. Stoltzfus' single in that inning tied Van Gavree's record. West Chester, however, scored two more in the bottom of that inning.
John Brogan finished with three RBIs on two hits.
The Marauders next square off with East Stroudsburg in a match-up of nationally-ranked teams. The two teams have combined for a 45-6 record so far in 2016 and it is a rematch of the 2015 PSAC Championship game. Millersville plays at ESU on Friday and hosts the Warriors on Saturday.
