Millersville, Pa. - Millersville starting pitchers
Brandon Miller and
Cordell Shannon tossed back-to-back complete games and surrendered just seven total hits in a sweep of Mansfield Friday at Cooper Park. The Marauders won game one 6-2 behind Miller's 11-strikeout performance and took game two 3-1 while Shannon did not allow an earned run.
No. 3 Millersville (17-1, 2-0 PSAC East) won set a new program record for consecutive wins after the win in the opener and stretched the run to 16 in game two. Millersville has now won 10 consecutive games over Mansfield (8-8, 0-2 PSAC East).
Miller boosted his record to 4-0 after allowing just four hits and his 11 strikeouts marked a career-high for a seven inning game. Millersville got on the board in the first inning when
Chas McCormick, who had three RBIs in the game, slapped a two-strike pitch into right field and
Tyler Orris scored from second.
Aaron Taylor set the tone for a big afternoon at the plate when he drilled his first career home run at the start of the third. McCormick added hi second RBI in the inning.
Mansfield picked up one in the fourth, cutting Millersville's lead to 3-2. But in the bottom of the inning, with the bases loaded,
Jeremy Musser was plunked with the bases loaded. One inning later,
Mitch Stoltzfus pushed his hitting streak to 14 and drove in his cousin
Dan Stoltzfus.
Shannon (3-1) matched Miller's game one performance by allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings. The only run he allowed came in the fifth inning when Tanner Klein scored from second on a fielding error. Shannon retired eight in a row from the first to the fourth and closed the game with seven consecutive batters sat down.
Millersville capitalized on two Mansfield errors. In the third, Orris executed a squeeze play that brought home
Ted Williams. Williams had moved to third on an error. A 1-1 tie was broken in the bottom of the fifth when an error allowed Taylor to score from second. Taylor then added some insurance in the sixth with a two-out base hit that scored
Mitch Stoltzfus.
Stoltzfus singled in his final at bat to push his hitting streak to 15 games.
David Summerfield singled in all three of his at bats. Taylor went 1-for-2 with a walk, giving him three hits, two RBIs and a homer in the twinbill.
The Marauders complete the series at Mansfield Saturday.
