Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville men's basketball team snapped a four game losing streak Monday evening downing the visiting Mansfield Mountaineers by a 77-70 decision. The Marauders earned their second victory of the season at Pucillo Gymnasium and have won five-straight against the Mountaineers with the last Mansfield victory coming in 2014.
Millersville (4-21, 4-17 PSAC) opened on an 8-0 run before the Mountaineers finally got on the board with just over 17 minutes left in the first half. The Marauders went cold from the field over the last five minutes of the half, but still carried a 37-30 lead into the halftime break.
The Ville never relinquished the lead in the second half as it built 10 point advantages on four different occasions.
Cornell Yarde II made the most of a
Ricky Mosley offensive rebound to begin the half as Yarde II stroked a shot from distance.
Ryan Beck nailed a 3-pointer with just less than 15 minutes remaining giving the home squad a 53-43 advantage. It was another Beck trey that once again upped the Mansfield deficit to double figures with 12:55 remaining in the game. The final 10-point advantage came on a
Shawn Williams layup putting up the Marauders 60-50. The Mountaineers closed the game on a 20-17 run that brought the final to 77-70.
The Marauders shot a season-high 37 treys and were able to convert 11 of the shots from downtown. Millersville was led in scoring by
Shawn Williams who poured in 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Williams also chipped in five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Guard
Cornell Yarde II finished in double-figures with 20 points and was 3-of-5 from downtown. The Marauders shot 41.7 percent from the field and held the visitors to 35.8 percent from the floor.
Mansfield (5-21, 3-18 PSAC) held a 54-35 rebounding advantage, but blew several of its second chance opportunities. The Mountaineers had three different players finish with a double-double. Joe Marshall led the visitors in scoring with 21 and chipped in 10 rebounds. Brad Willaims added 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds as Matt Tamanosky finished with 12 points and 11 boards.
Millersville's regular season finale is Wednesday against East Stroudsburg at Pucillo Gymnasium. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
