Williamston, N.C. - No. 17 Millersville baseball topped Indiana (Pa.) 15-7 Sunday afternoon in Williamston, N.C., capping a 3-0 weekend in which the Marauders totaled 50 runs and 53 hits.
The 50 runs scored in three consecutive days were the most by a Marauder team since the 2000 club scored 57 runs in a four-game span over three days. The 2013 team scored 63 runs in a single day against Lincoln. This series of three games saw
Mitch Stoltzfus,
Dan Stoltzfus Chas McCormick and
Tyler Orris all total eight hits with at least two extra base hits.
Mitch Stoltzfus drove in nine runs.
Dan Stoltzfus posted an .800 on base percentage in 15 trips to the plate.
Six wins in seven games is Millersville's best start since 2001. The Marauders have recorded at lesat nine hits six times and have double-digit hits in four consecutive games.
On Sunday, Millersville fell behind 3-2 in the second inning when IUP's first six hitters recorded hits and the first three batters scored. But the Crimson Hawks did not hold the lead long. In the bottom of the third, Millersville took full advantage of a throwing error and walks to two of the first three batters, opening the door to a nine run inning. Millersville totaled 15 plate appearances in the inning and Dan and
Mitch Stoltzfus both scored twice.
IUP picked up one in the fourth and one more in the fifth off of Marauder starter
Jim McDade, but Millersville had too much offense, scoring two in the fourth on a RBI double from
Dan Stoltzfus and a RBI ground out from Mitch. McCormick drove in a run with a single in the sixth, and
John Brogan blasted a pinch hit solo home run in the eighth.
Millersville chased IUP starter Hunter Bigler after 2.2 innings. Bigler gave up 11 runs but only two were earned. McDade last 4.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits in a no decision.
Stephen Muscovitch (1-0) worked through the fifth, and
Mike Mock,
Kyle Peterson and
Cody Stoneback all threw shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Dan Stoltzfus finished his day 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs. Orris scored three times and stole a base. Neff scored twice and stole a base, tying him with Orris for a team-high six steals. McCormick and
Mitch Stoltzfus both tallied two hits, two runs and two RBIs. McCormick also stole two bases.
Millersville returns home but it will be a short stay. The team heads back to North Carolina to face UNC Pembroke, Saint Rose and Francis Marion for four games in three days. Francis Marion is currently No. 29 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll.
