Williamston, N.C. - No. 17 Millersville baseball pounded out 21 hits and received another sterling start from junior
Brandon Miller for a 21-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown in Williamston Friday evening.
Miller allowed just three hits and struck out five without a walk in five innings. With a 10-1 lead in the fifth, Coach
Jon Shehan elected to turn to the bullpen early. Marauder relievers
Tanner Rahauser,
Eric Ligda,
Matt Binder and
Sean Stephenson took care of the Mountain Cats the rest of the way, combining for four no-hit innings. The quartet combined for four strikeouts and allowed just one baserunner. Miller boosted his record to 2-0 with 14 strikeouts, one walk, four hits and no earned runs allowed in his first two starts spanning 11.2 innings.
Williamston, N.C., has become Millersville's home away from Cooper Park since making its first trip there in 2010. The Marauders have played at Skewarkee Park in six of the last seven seasons posting a 14-2 record.
Five Marauders recorded at least two hits, and
Jeremy Musser,
Mitch Stoltzfus and
Chas McCormick drove in three runs apiece. Musser hit a homer and scored three times.
Tyler Orris, who went 4-for-7 with three runs, hit two doubles, drove in a pair and stole two bases.
Dan Stoltzfus recorded three hits, and
Ben Snyder hit a three-run home run. Millersville last scored 21 runs on April 23, 2015 against USciences.
Millersville scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. It took the Marauders just two at bats to break into the scoring column. Orris led off the game with a double and scooted home on an error following a
Dan Neff sacrifice bunt.
Mitch Stoltzfus doubled in his cousin Dan to give the Marauders a 2-0, first inning advantage.
The lead continued to grow at a rapid rate. Musser's homer was of the solo variety and came in the first at bat of a three-run fifth inning. The Marauders piled up five more on just two hits in the eighth. Musser drove in two with a double and
Tyler Webster picked up his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly. Newcomer
Ben Snyder bashed his three-run home run in the ninth, helping Millersville to a six-run inning.
Pitt-Johnstown used four pitchers and each allowed at least four runs. The Mountain Cats aided the Marauder offense with six errors.
The Marauders return to the Williamston diamond Saturday and face PSAC West rival Seton Hill in an early-season match-up of nationally-ranked teams. Seton Hill is ranked No. 20 in Division II and is one of only two teams to ever beat Millersville in Williamston. That win came in 2012.
