Millersville, Pa. - Millersville field hockey is back on track. The Marauders went on the road and defeated No. 9 Kutztown 2-1 in a PSAC game at Andre Reed Stadium behind goals from
Erica Tarsi and
Aliza Mizak.
After 23 minutes of scoreless field hockey, Tarsi and the Marauders capitalized on a corner to put Millersville on top. The ball rolled through the five-hole of Kutztown goalkeeper, Chardonnay Hope. It was Tarsi's fourth goal of the year.
Robyn Spatichia and Katie Deluca were responsible for the assist.
Only minutes later, Mizak added an insurance goal for Millersville. The sophomore took it into the circle by herself and fired off a shot that found its way into the back of the cage with 4:09 left to play in the first half.
Millersville improved to 13-3 (6-2) with the victory. It was the second essential win of the week for the Marauders, as they defeated No. 6 (and PSAC rival) Bloomsburg earlier this week. With the win, Millersville moves into third place, outright, with West Chester hanging around at only a half-game back.
However, Kutztown nearly gave the Marauders some déjà vu. Megan Tiwold scored with 12:48 left to play, cutting the lead in half. But the Golden Bear's weren't finished threatening.
As the final seconds ticked away, Kutztown earned an untimed corner. It was an oddly similar instance to when Millersville had its last untimed corner earlier this season.
Olivia Hershey ended the Bear's hopes in double overtime. Kutztown could not return the favor, but did get two shots off out of the corner. The first shot was blocked, the second went wide, and the Marauders could finally breathe as the referees blew the whistle and the game had officially culminated.
Millersville has picked up two important wins this week, but its next game is one of the most critical of the year. The Marauders will head to West Chester Wednesday, Oct. 26 to take on the Golden Rams in a game that could have NCAA Tournament implications. Millersville was able to defeat the Rams earlier this year by a score of 3-1. Â Â
