Millersville, Pa. - On paper Saturday's field hockey season opener between No. 1 Millersville and start-up program Pace was a mismatch and that was reflected in almost every statistical category except the final score. Millersville received a pair of goals from sophomore
Kathleen Bishop and one from senior
Megan Donlan to hold off the Setters, 3-2.
The Marauders out-shot Pace by a 26-2 margin and held a 22-1 advantage in penalty corners. But Pace scored on both shots it attempted. After Bishop and
Courtney Weaver put Millersville on the board at the 15:04 mark, Samantha Gray redirected a shot past Marauder first-time starter
Kylee Bair to even the score.
Millersville added two more goals before the end of the first half, getting one when Donlan received a penalty corner entry from
Katie DeLuca and ripped a shot into the left side of the goal. Three minutes later, freshman
Aliza Mizak hooked up with Bishop for a 3-1 win lead.
Pace kept Millersville off the board in the second half, but the Marauders had their chances. They produced 13 shots and 11 penalty corners in the half and put six shots on goal. Corrine Nocera made stops on all six shots. With just under 25 minutes left to play, Jenna Sanossian picked up a loose ball and led a breakaway toward Bair, who was all alone. Bair made a sliding attempt at the ball, but it found its way past her onto the stick of Halley Rose, who made the score 3-2.
Pace never had a chance to score the equalizer as Millersville dominated possession the rest of the way, out-shooting the Setters 10-0 over the final 24 minutes.
Millersville has won six consecutive season openers and seven and has won every home opener since 2009.
The Marauders return to action in less than 24 hours as they host Lindenwood at 12 p.m.
