Edinboro, Pa. – After defeating Slippery Rock 1-0 on Friday, the Millersville women's soccer team stayed hot and defeated the nationally-ranked Edinboro Fighting Scots 1-0 on a rainy Saturday night.
The Marauders have now won two straight matches and improve to 2-2 overall on the season and are 2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Fighting Scots to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC.
In the first half both teams traded possession with neither team being able to establish any dangerous goal scoring attempts. Both teams played to a scoreless tie going into the halftime break.
The game-winning goal was scored in the 62
nd minute when
Halie Parker drilled a shot from the left side of the box that beat Edinboro goalie Sierra Davis into the top right corner of the net. The goal represented Parker's third of the season (first game winner). She leads the Marauders in scoring and is ranked seventh in the conference in goals scored.
After the goal, Edinboro made several attempts to rally. Jansen Hartmann, Abby Gillespie and Ashley Mutkus all took shots at the net, but were unable to get the ball past Millersville goalie
Samantha Wolfe.
Much like Millersville's match on Friday, the Fighting Scots out-shot the Marauders 18-5. But solid defensive play from the Black & Gold's backline and an outstanding effort in goal by
Samantha Wolfe was enough to stymie any and all Edinboro offensive attacks. Wolfe finished the match with a game-high eight saves. Wolfe's second straight shutout places her first in the PSAC in shutouts per game. The junior also has been the most active goalie in the PSAC as she has faced 33 shots on the season and is averaging 8.25 saves per contest.
The Marauders will have a quick turn around, as they will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 for a home match against East Stroudsburg. The Warriors enter the contest with a 3-1 overall record with kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m.
