Millersville, Pa. - Dan Stoltzfus and
Tyler Orris both homered twice and
Tyler McDonald hit a grand slam as the No. 21 Millersville baseball team defeated USciences 21-1 and set a Cooper Park record for runs.
Millersville (34-9) scored 11 runs in the seventh inning alone and 15 in the sixth and seventh innings combined. The team totaled 16 hits and tallied double-digit runs for the 13th time this season. The game was called after the top of the eighth because of rain.
Stoltzfus went 4-for-6, scored four times and drove in a career-high six runs to move his RBI total to 63. He is just the second player in program history to total 60 RBIs in a season, and he pulls with nine of Matt Knox's program record. His 12th homer also pulled him to within two of the record held by Knox and Ryan Brink.
Stoltzfus wasn't the only Marauder playing long ball on Thursday. Orris had made 155 career starts before today's game and had never hit a homer at Cooper Park. That changed with a no-doubter to left field in the sixth. Then in the seventh, Orris singled and hit a three-run homer, scoring twice. McDonald's grand slam came in the Marauders' 11-run seventh. Stoltzfus hit his second of the game in the seventh. He had three RBIs with two hits in the inning.
David Summerfield went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a double and a walk.
Chas McCormick had two hits and scored three times. McDonald finished with five RBIs.
Alex Ramsay went 2-for-3 and reached base four times, scoring three times.
Lost in the all the offense were the pitching performances of
Steven Ghiardi and
Cody Stoneback. Ghiardi tossed a career-high 5.0 innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out five. Stoneback struck out five over three innings and allowed only two hits.
Millersville will now close its seasons with four home games. Friday's doubleheader with Mansfield was moved to Cooper Park. The Marauders will also host Mansfield on Saturday. The start time for both doubleheaders is 1 p.m.
