Millersville Splits with Mansfield on the Road

Mansfield, Pa. - In its first true road test of the season, the Millersville softball team earned a split with Mansfield after tallying just three hits and taking the 3-2 loss in game one before cranking out seven runs on 12 hits for a 7-3 victory in game two.

The Marauders now sit at 11-12 overall after the split which includes a 3-5 mark within the PSAC East while the Mountaineers are 7-8-1 in 2015 with a similar 2-5 league record. Millersville has now won three of its last four since opening conference play 0-4 and will look for its first three-game winning streak the next time out.

Cassidy Pinchorski (5-7) once again turned in a solid start in game one as she gave up three earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work with two walks and three strikeouts. However, run support was hard to come by for the Marauders who had just the two runs on three total hits.

Millersville was the first to score and did so in the top of the first inning. Jordan Sheffield led things off with a single to center, moved to second on Maria Spinosa's sacrifice bunt and scored unearned when Brittany Smith reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. The home team took the lead in the bottom of the third though thanks to a pair of RBI singles, but the Marauders weren't done yet.

The next half inning, B. Smith crushed the fifth home run of her career, fourth of her sophomore season and second in as many games. However, in the bottom of the fifth, the first hitter singled, moved over on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored thanks to an RBI double down the left field line. The Wyomissing, Pa., native is now tied for third in the PSAC in roundtrippers. The visitors went three up, three down in both the sixth and seventh frames as the score stood, 3-2.

In game two, the away team scored seven unanswered runs and they came in every inning except for the second and fourth.

The Marauders opened the scoring again and did so in the top of the first when B. Smith singled home both Spinosa and Sheffield. In the third, Sheffield made it 3-0 in favor of Millersville with a solo blast over the fence in left center to give her nine career home runs, which is tied for eighth in program history. The third wasn't over though as Danielle DiFilippo collected a base knock to push Spinosa across and make the score 4-0.

Kelsey Campbell made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the fifth before Spinosa gave Millersville three home runs on the day with a solo shot in the sixth. The sophomore now has three career home runs of her own and two this season. The Marauders' seventh and final run came in the top of the seventh when Campbell touched the dish on Megan Hallock's sacrifice fly to right. Mansfield tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh with three runs but that is where the scoring stopped and Millersville won with the four-run margin.

Brianna Andraos (6-5) went back above .500 with seven innings pitched, three runs, two earned, on five hits with two free passes and five punchouts. Campbell registered the first three-hit game of her career as she went 3-of-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Spinosa also talled the first three-hit game of her career with three runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a home run. Sheffield and Mandy Hammond also registered two hits apiece.

Next up, the Marauders host doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Bloomsburg (2:30 p.m.) and Lock Haven (1 p.m.), respectively.
