Marauders Send Shepherd Home with a Pair of Losses

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville softball team took advantage of its break from the gauntlet that is the PSAC East schedule with a sweep of visiting Shepherd on Wednesday thanks to scores of 3-2 and 2-0.

The Marauders (17-19) cranked out 14 hits in two games against a Rams' pitching staff that had a 5.49 ERA coming into the doubleheader. On the other side, Shepherd fell below .500 on the season at 14-15, has now lost three straight and eight of its last 12 games dating back to March 30. Once again, Millersville turned to its two starting pitchers in Cassidy Pinchorski and Brianna Andraos who only allowed two runs on 12 hits in the 14 total innings pitched.

The home team scored all three of its runs in the second and third frames of game one. In the bottom of the second, freshman Kelsey Campbell led off the inning with a solo home run off the bottom right corner of the scoreboard just past the left field fence. That blast gave Campbell two home runs for her rookie campaign. After an out was recorded, Gabbie Berry singled, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score after Jordan Sheffield doubled her in.

The Marauders added some insurance in the home half of the third when Heather Lutz singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored after Campbell collected her second hit in as many at-bats, an RBI double.

Pinchorski (8-11) threw her league-leading 17th complete game and maintained her strangehold as the conference's leader in strikeouts with 94 after punching out five Rams and walking only one on Wednesday. The freshman hurler gave up two runs or less for the 12th time in her 18 starts and her 1.83 ERA is good for 10th in the PSAC.

In game two, Andraos (9-8) turned the pitching up a notch and didn't allow a single run over her seven innings pitched with five hits allowed, two free passes and five strikeouts. That gave the West Chester East product her second shoutout of the season after she totaled eight as a sophomore.

With the way the junior was throwing in the circle, Millersville needed only two runs of support and they came in the first and fourth innings.

In the bottom of the first, Danielle DiFilippo hit a two-out double for her only hit of the day (1-of-6) before Brittany Smith singled her in. Three innings later, Lutz was hit by a pitch to open the inning, moved to second on Campbell's single, to third with Stephanie Kulp's sacrifice bunt, and scored thanks to Berry's RBI sacrifice bunt.

For the day, Campbell was 3-for-6 while Lutz, Maria Spinosa, Berry, B. Smith, and Sheffield each had two knocks apiece.

Millersville travels to Shippensburg on Friday for Domestic Violence Awareness Day and game one of the double dip is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
