Clermont, Fla. -Â The Millersville softball team held the lead four different times on Sunday against Bentley including a 4-1 advantage through four innings, but the Falcons kept coming back and eventually won with a walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the 10th.
The Marauders (3-4) committed seven errors on the day in their first 10-inning game since April 17, 2010. Not one of Bentley's seven runs were earned while the Falcons (1-1) tallied up three errors of their own but they only resulted in three unearned runs.
Millersville opened the scoring in the top of the first when
Brittany Smith singled through the left side, stole second and later came around to score when
Gabbie Berry reached on an error by the shortstop. After Bentley tied things up in the next half inning, the Marauders took the initiative in the fourth.
Stephanie Kulp got the party started with a triple to center, her second three-bagger of the season.
Maria Spinosa then scored Kulp with an RBI single and Spinosa scored all the way from first on
Megan McCurdy's first-career hit, a base knock through the left side. After the freshman moved to second on
Mandy Hammond's sacrifice bunt and stole third, yet another single through the left side, this time from
Jordan Sheffield, made it 4-1 in favor of Millersville.
The Falcons put up a three spot in the seventh and the game was tied at 4-4 heading into extra innings. In both the eighth and 10th frames, the Marauders took a one-run lead in the top of the inning only to see Bentley tie things up the next half inning. With the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the 10th, the bases loaded and two outs on the scoreboard, Bentley's Shannon Connor reached on an error by the third baseman that scored one. Morgan Mazone then singled up the middle to make it 7-6 in favor of the Falcons.
In the circle,
Brianna Andraos went six and a third innings with four runs given up, none earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. In relief,
Cassidy Pinchorski (2-2) threw 3.1 innings and surrendered three unearned runs on three hits while striking out and walking three batters apiece. Sheffield was the lone Marauder with multiple hits as she went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
