Clermont, Fla. -Â The Millersville softball team turned to some stellar pitching on day two of its spring break trip as it swept the doubleheader with wins over Lake Erie (6-1) and West Liberty (4-0).
The Marauders improved to 2-2 after the day was done and in game one against the Storm (5-5), their offense was led by
Danielle DiFilippo and
Jordan Sheffield who both hit home runs and are now responsible for three and eight career round trippers, respectively. With one more shot, Sheffield will move into a tie for eighth in program history for career home runs. A box score for the next game against the HIlltoppers (0-2) was not readily available.
As mentioned above, Millersville's offense came to life in the first game of the day against Lake Erie after it scored just two runs in 12 innings on the first day of the season. The senior DiFilippo got the party started with a solo home run in the bottom of the first.
The next inning,
Heather Lutz was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and after back-to-back outs through the air,
Jamie Trewhella continued the hot start to her freshman campaign with a single through the left side that moved Lutz to second.
Mandy Hammond then doubled in her first at-bat of the season and that brought in both Lutz and Trewhella. After the Storm made a pitching change, Sheffield blasted a two-run shot to put the Marauders up 5-0.
After Lake Erie got on the board with an RBI single in the fourth,
Melanie Snyder made it a 6-1 game with an RBI sacrifice bunt that scored
Stephanie Kulp in the sixth.
Staff ace
Brianna Andraos (1-1) earned her the first win of the season behind a solid seven-inning performance. The junior gave up just one earned run on eight hits while walking two batters and striking out five.
The Marauders will play Ashland and Cedarville (Ohio) on Saturday in Clermont with first pitches set for 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
