Millersville Pa. - Millersville baseball completed the series sweep of Lock Haven Monday by scores of 4-2 and 6-4, running its winning streak to eight.
Brandon Miller and
Jim McDade both pitched efficient complete games for the Marauders.
Neither Miller nor McDade issued a walk. Miller tossed his fourth consecutive complete game in the opener, improving to 5-1 on the season. He needed just 91 pitches to navigate nine innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. McDade breezed through seven innings on just 72 pitches, throwing 60 for strikes. Lock Haven managed nine hits and four runs but never truly threatened as Millersville opened the game with all six runs in the first three innings.
Chas McCormick, the newly-named PSAC East Player of the Week pushed his hitting streak to 13 with a single in both games. Seven Marauders drove in runs in the doubleheader. Millersville has swept Lock Haven in back-to-back seasons.
Game one started as a pitchers' duel between Miller and Lock Haven's Madison Neddo. Neddo did not give up a hit until the bottom of the fourth. But the Marauders started rolling with that one hit.
Dan Neff drew a leadoff walk. He was followed by singles from McCormick and
Dan Stoltzfus.
Jeremy Musser followed with a run scoring double.
David Summerfield pushed home a run with another single, and
Tyler McDonald drove in the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
Lock Haven put two runners on in the fourth and fifth, but both instances, Miller ended the inning with ground outs to McDonald. Lock Haven's Ryan Henritzy and Austin Bott hit back-to-back homers in the sixth to cut Millersville's lead to 4-2. In the seventh, Ryan Petersheim singled to bring the tying run to the plate. McDonald made a diving grab at third base and started a 5-4-3 double play that ended the game.
The Millersville offense did all of its damage early in game two.
Tyler Orris was the catalyst, starting the first and second innings with singles. After a pair of walks to McCormick and
Dan Stoltzfus in the first
Mitch Stoltzfus and Summerfield drove in runs for a 3-0 lead. McCormick doubled home Neff in the second, and Stoltzfus doubled in McCormick in the next at bat. The lead extended to 6-1 in the third when
Kurt Seiders singled in Summerfield, who hit a one-out double. Millersville recorded five, two-out RBI hits in the first three innings.
McDade quickly worked his way through the Lock Haven lineup. He needed only five pitches to record a pair of fly outs and a strikeout in the fourth. Lock Haven picked up two runs in the sixth on a two-run homer from Ethan Moore. They closed to within 6-4 in the seventh on a two-out, running scoring single from Ryan Koch. But McDade disposed of Henritzy, the No. 3 hitter, with a fly out to Seiders in left.
Mitch Stoltzfus, Orris, Summerfield and Seiders all recorded two hits in the game. Joe Nestor (1-3) took the loss while McDade improved to 3-2 with the win. He also struck out a season-high six batters.
Millersville returns to action at Bloomsburg on Friday.
