Philadelphia, Pa. - Millersville baseball overcame a three-run deficit with four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat Philadelphia University 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia.
John Brogan, a pitcher turned first baseman, delivered three RBIs including two on a single in the seventh as the Marauders mounted their rally. The rally was completed in the eighth when
Dan Neff and
Chas McCormick delivered run-scoring base hits. Millersville (11-3) received three scoreless innings from
Sean Stephenson (1-0) and
Matt Binder out of the bullpen.
The Marauders put at least one runner on base in each of the first eight innings but stranded 10 of them. Brogan started the scoring in the top of the third when he drove in McCormick, who had reached on an error. Philadelphia (0-1), playing its first game of the season, led off the bottom of the frame with back-to-back hits and Hector Gonzalez brought home John Brocious with a ground out to
David Summerfield at second base.
That was the lone run surrendered by Marauder starter
Cody Stoneback. He allowed just three hits and two walks over four innings. Philadelphia took the lead against the Millersville bullpen, scoring three runs in the sixth despite recorded just one hit in the inning. The Rams received help in the form of three walks, a hit by pitch and a fielding error.
Stephenson settled the Marauder bullpen with a 1-2-3 effort in the seventh and eighth. Meanwhile, the Marauder bats came to life against Philadelphia's seventh and eighth pitchers of the game. The seventh-inning rally started with three consecutive walks from the top of the lineup. Brogan's two-run single brought Millersville within 4-3. Summerfield,
Tyler McDonald and Neff started the eighth with three-straight singles. Neff's brought home Summerfield to tie the score, and two batters later, McCormick gave Millersville the lead for good with a single of his own.
Binder put the Rams away in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Summerfield reached base in all four at bats and his two singles extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Tyler Orris reached base three times with a double, single and a walk.
Millersville is scheduled to start PSAC East action on Friday at West Chester. The 2015 home opener is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
