Millersville, Pa. – Millersville opened Tuesday's game against Kutztown scorching hot from 3-point range nailing consecutive attempts, but the Marauders cooled from the field and dropped a 69-60 home decision to Kutztown.
Millersville (2-5, 2-2 PSAC East) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead that was capped off by a
Cornell Yarde II trey, but from that point forward the Marauders were without the services of the junior guard who finished only playing in 12 minutes. However, the Marauders built a 10-point advantage capped off by a
Ricky Mosley 3-pointer at the 14:23 mark of the first half.
Kutztown (4-1, 3-1 PSAC) used transition offense to climb back into the contest and eventually earned its first lead of the game with a Dan Cuevas layup that put the Golden Bears up 19-18 with 8:25 left in the first. The Golden Bears were extremely efficient from the floor finishing the first half 13-of-27 from the field (48.1%) and carried a 35-31 lead into the break.
The Marauders clawed their way back and trailed 52-51 with 8:11 remaining after a layup from Demerk Weglinski. That was the closest the home team came as the Marauders left several points on the court failing to convert from the free throw line finishing at a 50 percent clip. Kutztown was much more efficient (16-of-22) from the charity stripe as it helped close out the Marauders down the stretch.
Two Marauders finished in double figures.
Shawn Williams led the way with a game-high 20 points and added three steals. Weglinski came just shy of tallying his fifth double-double of the season pouring in 12 points and corralling eight rebounds. Freshman
Jon Lott matched a career-high nine points against the Golden Bears. Kutztown shot 48 percent from the field, while the Marauders finished shooting 38.6 percent.
Millersville is the midst of the three-game home stand. The Marauders host Seton Hill on Friday, Dec. 4 and California (Pa.) on Saturday Oct. 5. Tipoff against the Griffins is slated for 7:30 p.m.
