Philadelphia, Pa. – In a tale of two halves that favored the homestanding Griffins, Chestnut Hill used a 25-16 rebounding advantage to help build a 35-27 halftime lead. Cornell Yarde II paced the Ville attack as Williams netted 25 points, collected six rebounds and six assists while Yarde II finished in double figures for the fifth-straight contest with 18 points.
The contest opened with Millersville (2-3) and Chestnut Hill (2-3) combining to turn the ball over nine times in the opening seven minutes. The Griffins held an 11-10 advantage with 12:27 left in the first. The Marauders answered with a 7-2 run that earned them a 17-13 lead and was capped off by a
Markeith Mont layup off of a steal. The Griffins would respond as the lead was quickly erased on a Luke Dickinson three-point shooting foul which he converted to narrow the deficit to 17-16 midway through the first half.
Chestnut Hill closed the opening frame on a 16-10 run that was capped off by hard work on the glass. Forward Antonio Toplyn Jr. grabbed the offensive board giving the Griffins the extra possession to extend their advantage to eight points, 35-27.
The Griffins opened the second period spreading the ball around in an 11-5 run that left the Marauders down 46-35 as the Ville tried to use shots from three-point range to close the deficit. After hitting a couple in a row, Millersville got cold from deep as they finished the contest 13-of-34 (.382) from three-point range. Chestnut Hill earned 33 trips to the free throw line in the second half and converted on 25 of their attempts extending their lead to 18 points, 68-50 with 7:55 to play. Chestnut Hill coasted to the 92-77 victory as time expired.
Shawn Williams scored all 25 of his points in the second half. Junior
Ricky Mosley scored in double figures for the second-straight game finishing with 13 points. Mosely and Yarde II combined to take 15 threes, hitting seven (7-of-15, .467) in the long-range effort.
Following the Thanksgiving layoff, the Marauders return to non-conference action with a road contest slated against Goldey-Beacom. Millersville heads to Delaware on Saturday, Nov. 28 for a 1 p.m. tip.
