Field Hockey's Season Ends in NCAA Quarterfinals

Millersville, Pa. - Another match-up between Millersville and West Chester field hockey and another overtime, one-goal game. This time, visiting West Chester used a breakaway goal from Rachal Toppi with just 1:20 left in the second overtime to advance her Golden Rams past Millersville into the NCAA Semifinals, 2-1.

For the sixth time in the last eight match-ups, the two rivals played in overtime. The win was a bit of redemption for West Chester (17-4) as Millersville (18-3) had knocked the Golden Rams out of the NCAA playoffs in 2013 and 2014. Toppi scored both of West Chester's goals in the game while Millersville's goal came from Courtney Weaver. The tally was Weaver's second of the season--both scores coming against West Chester.

The Marauders trailed 1-0 into the second half after being shutout in shots and corners in the first period for the first time all season. Toppi gave her team the advantage at the 23:04 mark by quickly knocking a rebound high into the cage. Millersville evened the score at 43:09 when Kayla Bixler's shot off of a corner play was redirected by Weaver. The Marauders produced four shots and three corners in the second.

West Chester held a 5-1 advantage is shots taken in the overtime periods. Millersville's lone shot was in the second overtime when Robyn Spatichia pushed a shot in the pads of a downed Sarah Krause. Millersville had two breakaway opportunities with Olivia Hershey in front. The first came late in the first OT when Hershey stole a pass and worked one on two with a keeper and a defender. She was tangled up and could not get off a shot. With just over five minutes left in the second overtime, Hershey pushed the ball into scoring position at the center of the circle but lost the ball when she went to the ground without a call from the officials.

Toppi's game-winner came as the game appeared to be headed for a shootout. Toppi, running full into the circle, received a long, perfectly-placed pass from Alexis Versak and quickly snapped a shot in the goal.

West Chester advances to play No. 1 seed East Stroudsburg in the NCAA Semifinals on Nov. 20 in Bloomsburg, Pa. Millersville's season comes to end after reaching three consecutive NCAA Tournaments and four consecutive PSAC Championship games. All three of Millersville's losses came by one goal and all three against teams playing in the NCAA Semifinals. Throughout the course of 2015, Millersville set a program record for consecutive shutouts and goals against average.
