GAME OVERVIEW• The Millersville men's soccer team welcomes the Mercyhurst Lakers to town in arguably the biggest game of the season on Senior Day. The Marauders have already secured a PSAC Postseason Tournament berth, but the winner of tomorrow's matchup not only will be crowned PSAC Regular Season Champions but also earn the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament. The No. 1 seed earns the right to host the semifinal and final matches at their respective home facilities in the post season tournament.
• In a pregame ceremony, the athletic department and the men's soccer program will celebrate the careers of the three Marauder seniors:
Ben Johnston,
Jaime Vazquez and
Kohl Orner. Coach Widdowson had the following to say about this exceptional class. "Overall this group of seniors has and will leave a tremendous mark on this program," said Widdowson. "Their contribution cannot be under estimated and I am sure everyone involved with this program from alumni, fans, coaches, parents and players are desperate to see this senior group get rewarded with something at the end of the season for the tremendous things they and this team have accomplished in the regular season."
• With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the men's and women's soccer programs will be hosting a "Shoot for a Cure" at Pucillo Field. The Relay for Life group will be on hand for both matches selling pink shirts and collecting charitable donations for the fight against breast cancer.
• The Marauders have posted nine shutouts on the season as it began the year with an 11-0-1 record--the best in program history. Millersville is an extremely balanced squad that has scored 33 goals and has only conceded a mere 10 on the season. Even more impressive, the Black & Gold have recorded 32 assists on the year, which is nine more than the next closest PSAC school East Stroudsburg.
Justin Torres-Groover and
Christopher Sosa have been the most efficient set-up men. Torres-Groover has tallied a team best five assists and Sosa has recorded four assists from his central midfield position.
• For the season,
Jaime Vazquez has paced the Marauder offensive attack as he ranks first in the PSAC in points (38), goals (17) and game-winning goals (7). The 38 points surpasses a career-high for the Bernville, Pa., native, and his 17 goals scored has garnered national recognition as it ties him for fifth best in all of Division II. Vazquez has been named PSAC Player of the Week twice (Sept. 14 & 28). The last Marauder to surpass 40 points on the season was Sean Szerba who scored 23 goals and tallied six assists in 1998.
• 10 different Marauders have netted a goal on the season, including five freshmen (
Jaxson Burns,
Chase Flickinger,
Dylan Fogerty,
Kyle Finsterbush and
Danny Kline). Burns has produced the second most points (11) on the team as he has scored four goals and assisted on another three efforts. Flickinger has each netted three goals on the year, which is third best on Coach
Steve Widdowson's squad.
• Goalkeeper and captain
Kohl Orner has been extremely composed and reliable in net since entering the starting lineup on October 4, 2014. In 2015, Orner has played every minute of each of Millersville's 16 matches. Orner has been the leader of the backline of defense that consists of the likes of a combination of usual starters
Devin Rediker,
Tanner Brenize,
Kyle Finsterbush,
Drew McMenamin and
Ahmed Qaisi. Orner has made 56 saves on the year and his nine shutouts is the top mark in the PSAC.
ABOUT THE SERIES• Both team's first met in 1992 with the Marauders dropping a 3-1 contest to Mercyhurst. The Lakers joined the PSAC in 2008, and the teams have established quite the rivalry in recent years. In 2013, the Marauders beat the nationally ranked Lakers in the regular season, but Mercyhurst returned the favor in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship as it won by a 3-1 score.
THE LAST MEETING (MERCYHURST 1, MILLERSVILLE 0 - OCT. 4, 2014)• Millersville suffered a heart breaking 1-0 loss to Mercyhurst a season ago. The only goal scored on the evening occurred because of a questionable call inside the penalty box that resulted in a converted penalty shot attempt by the Lakers. Mercyhurst was generally able to control the pace of play in the 1st half as it ended up recording 11 shots to Millersville's one. The dagger occurred in the 43rd minute of play when a Marauder defender slid into Danny Deakin inside the penalty box. The slide tackle appeared to be clean but Deakin was still awarded a penalty kick in which he converted for his fifth goal of the season. Millersville recorded six shots in the second period with the most dangerous occurring on a
Jesse Zimmerman attempt. The forward received a pass that left him one-on-one in open field versus the Laker goalkeeper who ended up sliding into Zimmerman resulting in a yellow card for Ryan Arvin and a free kick from 30-yards out. Millersville failed to convert and the score held 1-0 through regulation.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• The Lakers struggled through their non-conference slate as they went 0-6, but have picked it up in PSAC matches as they are second best team in the conference with an 8-1-1 mark
• In its previous match, Mercyhurst shutout the visiting Seton Hill Griffins. Senior Richard Vanhorne scored twice and graduate student goalkeeper Daniel Lowton stopped all six shots he faced. Vanhorne, who has battled through injuries this season after being named an All-PSAC Second Team selection a year ago, appears to be in good-form just at the right time for the Lakers. Mercyhurst will be without the services of reigning PSAC Offensive Player of the Year, All-PSAC First Team and ECAC Player of the Year Jack Watson. For undisclosed reasons Watson hasn't appeared in a match for the Lakers in the 2015 season.Â
