Women’s Soccer Falls to Mansfield in Highly Competitive Affair

Mansfield, Pa. – The Millersville women's soccer team fought back from a 2-0 first period deficit, but a game-winner by Mansfield with 34 seconds remaining play sunk the Marauders, 3-2 in a PSAC thriller Tuesday afternoon.
The teams were locked in a 2-2 tie for the last 38 minutes of the game after Millersville rallied with two second half goals. Both teams exchanged numerous scoring opportunities before Karyn Anselmo lofted a pass to teammate Delaney Medows who saw her shot attempt trickle off of Kaitlyn Remely's gloves across the goal line for the winning score.
Mansfield opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Kelsey Chapman sent in a long cross to the right side of the goal that was then headed in by Rachel Hoenwarter.
The Mountaineers doubled their lead nine minutes later when Kaitlin Holborn received a long pass from Danielle Lentz and fooled Samantha Wolfe from eight yards out for the 2-0 advantage.
Millersville came out of the halftime break aggressively and immediately cut the score to 2-1 just over four minutes into the second period. Alexandrea Powell netted her third goal of the season as she ripped her shot from 18-yards out over the keeper's outstretched hands.
With momentum on their side, the Marauders immediately regained possession and scored the equalizer at the 51:12 mark. Taylor Sprenkle fed the ball to Halie Parker who chipped the ball into the upper right corner of the net for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Millersville nearly netted the game-winner in the 86th minute off of an Emily Purcell shot from distance, but Mountaineer goalie Rachel Fox made an outstanding save.
Moments later, forward Kelsey Chapman fired a shot that beat Kaitlyn Remely, but a Marauder defender was able to block the shot attempt and clear the ball out of the 18-yard box.
Samantha Wolfe and Kaitlyn Remely split time in goal as Wolfe finished the match with four saves and Remely made six stops.
The Mountaineer win was the first over Millersville since a 2-0 victory in 2009. The loss drops the Marauders to 5-11 overall and 4-11 in conference action.
Millersville closes out the 2015 season by hosting Mercyhurst Saturday, Oct. 31. The Ville will recognize its four seniors during a pregame ceremony. Kickoff from Pucillo Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
