East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Trailing No. 3 East Stroudsburg 1-0 with time ticking away, No. 1 Millersville field hockey earned its 15th penalty corner of the afternoon.
Arianna Grays converted what the Marauders thought was the equalizing goal, but the officials disallowed the score, stating the ball had not left the circle on the insert. With the score wiped off the board, the Marauders were dealt their first defeat of the 2015 season.
Millersville (13-1, 5-1 PSAC) and East Stroudsburg (11-2, 6-0 PSAC) played to a 1-0 final on Sept. 15, but this time, instead of a Marauder first half goal, it was an East Stroudsburg score. Rebecca Snyder scored her first goal of the season just 2:10 into Tuesday's contest, and that was the extent of the offense for both teams.
The win puts East Stroudsburg is lone possession of first place in the PSAC standings while Millersville slips into a tie for second with Kutztown with four games left on the regular season slate. Snyder's goal also put an end to Millersville's epic scoreless streak which stretch over 11 games, nine consecutive shutouts and 720:28 of playing time. The Marauders came within one shutout of tying the PSAC record set by Bloomsburg in 1995. The 13-game winning streak was the program's best-ever start to a season. Only five Division II teams have finished undefeated since 1981, most recently UMass-Lowell (24-0) in 2010.
The goal was the first allowed by
Samantha Rumler in nine appearances. She matched her season high against the Warriors with three saves.
After ESU took the early lead, Millersville went on the attack and produced two shots in the next four minutes. The Marauders went on Millersville to total 15 corners and seven shots, but only one of those shots came in the second half. ESU keeper Danielle Ard made four saves, including three in the first period. Ard turned away Maragret Thorwart's 50th minute shot, and the final shot from Grays was waved off.
Olivia Hershey led Millersville with three shots and two shots on goal.
The Marauders return to action on Oct. 17 at Bloomsburg.
