Millersville, Pa. - After Millersville built a 17-point lead, Gannon used the PSAC's top defense to rally and force overtime. But Millersville turned to its own defense to create offense in the extra session. The Marauders scored eight of their 13 overtime points off of five Gannon turnovers to win 66-61, stopping Gannon's six-game winning streak.
In its last two games, Millersville (6-7, 3-5 PSAC) snapped Mercyhurst's seven game winning streak and handed Gannon (8-5, 7-1 PSAC) its first PSAC loss. The win improved Millersville to 5-1 in Pucillo Gymnasium and 3-0 in overtime games. The Parker brothers--Tavon and Kelvin--combined for 30 points. Tavon owned the overtime period, scoring seven of the team's 13 points and picking up a pair of steals that directly led to Millersville baskets.
The final 20 minutes of regulation was an adventure. Of Millersville's first 12 field goals made, 11 were 3-pointers. The Marauders drained 11-of-18 in the first 24:07 of action including four in a row to start the second half.
Tavon Parker's triple with 15:53 left in regulation pushed Millersville's lead to 47-30--it's largest of the game.
Gannon coach John T. Reilly changed the course of the game by immediately switching to a 3-2 zone that effectively eliminated Millersville's outside shooting. Over the final 15:53 of regulation, Millersville scored just six points on 3-of-17 shooting and missed eight 3-pointers--many of which were taken with the shot clock nearing its expiration.
Gannon slowly erased Millersville's 17 point lead, cutting it 53-51 with 2:50 left on Rich Austin's drive and score. The teams remained scoreless until Austin followed an Adam Blazek miss with a tip-in, tying the game with 26 seconds to go.
Kelvin Parker's last second 3-pointer circled the basket before popping out with no time remaining. Gannon outscored Millersville 23-6 over the final 15:53 of regulation.
The Golden Knight run carried into overtime with Austin scoring again and Girbran Smith hitting two foul shots.
Shawn Williams scored with 3:11 left to make it a two-point game and then promptly swiped the ball from Smith and fed
Tavon Parker for a lay-up. A heads-up Parker lingered near the hoop and intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass. His easy hoop tied the game. It was Kelvin's turn on the next defensive possession, stealing the ball, which eventually turned into an
Eddie Callender put-back basket. After scoring six points in more than 15 minutes in regulation, Millersville scored eight in a little more than a minute in overtime.
Blazek, the reigning PSAC West Player of the Year rallied Gannon to within 61-59 with a basket, but Tavon delivered the knock-out punch with a 3-pointer with a minute to play. He came up with on more steal with 36 seconds left, which Kelvin turned into a lay-up.
Despite it's lenghty second half drought, Millersville made a season-high 12 3-pointers on 31 attempts.
Shawn Williams finished with a career-high eight assists. Callender (11) and
Sam Light (10) joined the Parkers in double figures. All 10 of Light's points came in the first half.
