Millersville, Pa. - Sophomore field hockey player Margaret Thorwart is one of three PSAC athletes who have been selected to participate in the NCAA's 2015 Student-Athlete Leadership Forum from April 9-12 in Orlando, Fla. The two others are Ellen Brady of Pitt-Johnstown (women's soccer) and Ben Drexler of Mansfield (cross country/track & field).
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to represent Millersville University at the NCAA Forum," said Thorwart. "I am looking forward to meeting student-athletes from other schools and sharing our ideas on leadership. I hope that by attending this forum, I will be able to give back to the Millersville community through service and I hope I can motivate other MU students to get involved, too. As a bonus, I think it will be fun to learn with others."
According to the NCAA, participant eligibility for the student-athletes is based on the following requirements:
• Athletics eligibility and be participating in an NCAA-sponsored sport during the 2015-16 academic year.
• Must be in good academic standing according to the institutional requirements.
• Must have demonstrated the ability or a strong desire to lead.
• All participants selected are expected to participate in all activities.
The 5-4 midfielder has met the above criteria with flying colors. Not only was she a vital part of the team's 2014 National Championship run and played 14 minutes in the final against LIU Post, she was the recipient of the Elite 89 Award in Louisville, Ky. which is presented to the player with the highest cumulative GPA at the championship site of competition. Majoring in communications, her cumulative GPA was 3.967 when receiving the honor.
The Marauders have appeared in the Division II Final Four for two straight seasons and both times, Thorwart was able to be a part of community outreach. As a freshman, the team spent time with a Virginia Beach elementary school teaching field hockey skills and this past fall, the squad went to Louisville's Home of the Innocents to have a pizza party, listen to music and play some games.
The NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum engages a diverse and dynamic representation of student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administrators. Student-athletes selected to attend the Leadership Forum return to campus with invaluable leadership skills, the experience of exploring the relationship between personal values, core beliefs and behavioral styles, and a thorough understanding of the NCAA as a whole, the different divisional perspectives and the valuable role of Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC).
"I am thrilled for Margo to have this chance to be a part of the Leadership Forum, she already serves as a peer mentor with the Choices Program at MU and really strives both on and off the field to challenge and excel herself as a person as much as a competitor," said her head coach, Shelly Behrens. "There are so many things in all of our players' lives that are important to them and their service in the communities we are in is just one of them. I appreciate the passion Margo has for this initiative so much as it is the same with her on the field approach. I know she is going to really thrive and grow and I am excited for her!"
