Millersville, Pa. - After leading the Millersville field hockey team to its first-ever NCAA Division II Championship, head coach Shelly Behrens was honored as the Division II Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) at its recent convention.
Behrens had already racked up awards for the NFHCA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, PSAC Coach of the Year and Synapse Sports Division II Coach of the Year. She is now a three-time winner of the PSAC award and a two-time winner of the Synapse Sports honor.
Under Behrens' watch, the Marauders rolled to a school record 20 victories and a third consecutive appearance in the PSAC Championship game. Millersville responded from its title game defeat by defeating West Chester in overtime in the NCAA Semifinal and then shutting out the nation's No. 1-ranked offense LIU Post in the national championship game.
Millersville led the nation in goals against average and shutouts for the second consecutive season and set a school record in the latter for the second season in a row. Five of Behrens' players earned All-America status--the most of any program. Rachel Dickinson was named NFHCA Division II Player of the Year, Synapse Sports Defensive Player of the Year and is the field hockey representative for the Division II Woman of the Year Award presented by Honda.
Behrens, having just completed her seventh season at Millersville, boasts an 85-56 record with the Marauders, including a 53-13 record over the last three seasons.
