No. 20 Marauders Win OT Thriller
9/7/2014 4:26:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team was able to gain its first victory on the 2014 season by coming back from a two-goal deficit and winning 3-2 in thrilling fashion over West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon.
The 20th-ranked Marauders went down 1-0 at the 31:40 mark when Bobcat midfielder Mike Geislhart maneuvered around the defender en route to a clean shot attempt that he fired into the back of the net. West Virginia Wesleyan was able to get on the board again when Geislhart facilitated the offence delivering a pass from midfield all the way to the 18-yd box where forward Alex White beat goalkeeper David Brubaker.
But the momentum suddenly swung into the Marauders favor when they forced a turnover and got into a three-on-two break where Austin Swoyer fed Jesse Zimmerman making it a 2-1 game. Play suddenly got chippy as Bobcat defender Thomas Capstick attempted a slide tackle inside the box resulting in both a red card for Capstick and a penalty shot opportunity for Millersville. Jaime Vazquez converted on the penalty kick making it a 2-2 game at the 79:21 mark. The score remained tied as the contest went into overtime.
8:30 minutes into the first over time period Millersville was rewarded a free kick in threatening position where Jaime Vazquez fired towards the left side of the net. The ball was ricocheted off a defender, and still had enough momentum to trickle into the back of the net, ending the game in a 3-2 Marauder victory.
Millersville held a 19-16 shot advantage over West Virginia Wesleyan. Not only was this the first victory of the 2014 season but it was the first colligate win for goalkeeper David Brubaker.
Millersville goes on the road for it's next contest when it travels to Philadelphia to battle the Rams on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
