Millersville, Pa. - New season, same result. Millersville field hockey goalkeeper
Lauren Sotzin posted her 20th career shutout and set a Millersville record with her 35th win in a 6-0 blanking of Lindenwood Friday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Sotzin's classmates
Alicia Youtz and
Champayne Hess scored two goals apiece for the nation's No. 1-ranked team.
Millersville (1-0) built a 4-0 lead at the half but five minutes into the second half, a storm rolled into Millersville, delaying the contest for two hours. The lightning only postponed the inevitable. Sotzin needed to make only three saves to surpass Millersville University Hall of Fame member Stacey Hollinger '89 on the career wins list. Her career record improved to 35-12 and her goals against average dropped to a miniscule 0.85.
The shutout stretched Millersville's home winning streak to 10 games and its home scoreless streak to 537:59. It last allowed a goal at home on Sept. 27, 2013.
The senior class also provided the bulk of the offense. Youtz scored off an assist from junior
Lauren Gerhart just 1:08 into the game. Under three minutes later,
Katelyn Zapp deflected a shot from
Kayla Bixler for a 2-0 lead. Hess then scored twice off assists from Youtz and
Hannah Whitman. After the break, Bixler cranked a shot from the top of the circle that hit the back of the cage. Hess found Youtz for the sixth and final goal at the 66:31 mark.
Millersville has now outscored Lindenwood 13-0 in the last two season openers. The Marauders out-shot Lindenwood 19-4 and held a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Marauders have a showdown with No. 2 Shippensburg on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Millersville beat Shippensburg in the 2013 PSAC Championship game, but the Raiders ended Millersville's season in the NCAA Semifinals. Game time is 4 p.m.
