Margaret Thorwart Wins Elite 89 Award; Millersville Wins Team GPA Award

Millersville, Pa. - Margaret Thorwart, a Millersville University sophomore, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2014 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship. The Millersville field hockey team is also the winner of the Team GPA Award.
Thorwart, majoring in communications, currently carries a 3.967 GPA. She was presented with the award during the Division II Festival Opening Cermony on Tuesday in Louisville, Ky. Millersville's captains, Sarah Bomberger, Rachel Dickinson, Lauren Sotzin and Katelyn Zapp accepted the Team GPA Award for a squad that owns a 3.236 GPA.
The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
The team award is presented to the team with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the final site for the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship.
Thowart, named a PSAC Scholar-Athlete and member of the NFHCA All-Academic Squad as a freshman, has played an integral role in Millersville's second consecutive trip to the NCAA Semifinals. The midfielder has played in all 21 games, totaling 11 shots and one assist.
