Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's basketball team hit the gas pedal in the final 12 minutes of Saturday's 75-63 win over visiting Goldey-Beacom. With
Shawn Williams leading the way, the Marauders scored 35 points over that span and pulled away for its second consecutive win.
Millersville (3-3) improved to 2-0 at home and evened its record at 3-3. The Marauders trailed the Lightning 41-40 with just over 12 minutes left, but
Sam Light, who scored a career-high 16 points, hit a free throw to even the score. From that point on, Millersville scored 35 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, 4-of-7 shooting from three and 15-of-18 from the line. Williams scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the run including seven from the line.
The Marauders did plenty of damage at the free throw line, knocking down 25-of-30 in the game. Williams made 10-of-12, and Light sank 7-of-8 from the line and also hit 3-of-6 from 3-point range. While shooting 42.9 percent from the field, Millersville limited Goldey-Beacom to 34.3 percent shooting from the field and 2-of-16 shooting from deep. In addition to Williams and Light,
Tyree Smith totaled 15 points and eight rebounds, giving him 36 points and 17 rebounds in his last two games after totaling seven points and six boards in his first two games.
Eddie Callender scored a season-low six points but led the team in rebounding with nine and blocked two shots.
Millersville started the game just as efficiently as it finished it. The home team jumped out to a 10-0 lead with points from four different players. Goldey-Beacom responded with a 9-0 run to close the gap, and the two clubs traded leads four times until the Marauders' late surge.
The Marauders host Bowie State on Monday at 7 p.m. Bowie State topped Millersville 76-64 in the season opener played at Lincoln.
