Louisville Bound! Marauders Win Double OT Thriller to Advance

Millersville, Pa. - Overtime is Champayne Hess' time to shine. Just as the Millersville field hockey senior did earlier this season against West Chester, she scored the game-winning, double-overtime goal on Tuesday to give the Marauders a 2-1 win over Shippensburg and spot in the NCAA Semifinal on Dec. 4 in Louisville, Ky.

Hess' goal came in the 93rd minute of action. It was her 10th of the season and third game-winner. Fellow senior and birthday girl Katelyn Zapp delivered the game's first goal just 1:37 into the game, which staked the Marauders to an early lead. The win sends Millersville (18-3) to the NCAA Semifinal for the second consecutive season and exacts a measure of revenge against the program that ended its 2013 season.

A 93-minute thriller should have been expected between Millersville and Shippensburg. It was the fourth meeting of the season between the teams with Millersville winning three of them, including the two postseason match-ups. The clubs have evenly split the last 12 meetings dating back to 2011.

The scoring started quickly with Zapp finding herself unmarked in the center of the circle following a pass from junior Megan Donlan. Zapp quickly turned and shot high against Ally Mooney, the nation's leader in save percentage. The goal was Zapp's 16th of the season.

The Marauders held the 1-0 advantage until a well-executed Shippensburg penalty corner resulted in Kendall Beck's fifth goal of the season at the 45:15 mark. Off the insert, the first shot from Suzanne Muller was saved and the follow up was blocked. The rebound found Beck, who knocked in the ball from the right side of the cage.

Millersville made one final rush at the end of regulation, firing five shots in the last two minutes. With 18 seconds left, Hess' shot was turned away by defender Taylor Fisher.

The teams combined for just two corners and three shots in the first 15 minutes of extra time. But 7:30 into the second OT period, Hess landed her stick on the ball at midfield and outraced a pair of defenders to Mooney. Hess' first shot was saved but gathering the ball off of Mooney's pads, she fired a second time that found the back of the cage.

Millersville held a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 15-6 edge in corners. Lauren Sotzin made three saves for the win. Mooney stopped seven shots for the Raiders.

Millersville now heads to Louisville, Ky., the site of the NCAA Semifinal and NCAA Championship. The Marauders draw the region's top seed, West Chester. The game from Trager Stadium will start at 1 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on ncaa.com.
