Millersville, Pa. - With Millersville trailing three matches into Wednesday's PSAC dual with Shippensburg, the Marauder freshmen turned the tables. Freshmen won three consecutive bouts starting at 149 pounds and five of the Marauders' six wins came from the first-year grapplers. Freshman 285-pound
Jordan Wertz took the decider to clinch a 22-16 Millersville victory.
Millersville (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) picked up some much-needed bonus points from 149-pound
Shane Ruhnke's major decision, and
Ian Shannon's second period pin at 165 pounds. The Marauders led 19-16 with Wertz facing Francis Slover in the dual's final match, and the rookie methodically rallied after Slover took a 1-0 lead on an escape early in the second period. Late in the second, Wertz hit a takedown and then scored three back points on a near fall. Wertz started the third in the bottom position and immediately escaped and stayed on his feet the rest of the period to seal the win. It was Millersville's second consecutive win over Shippensburg (0-4, 0-1 PSAC) and both wins came by 22-16 scores.
Sophomore
Austin Camacci started the evening with a 3-0 decision over freshman Josh Charles. Camacci needed only one escape and a takedown to give the Marauders a three-point lead from the start. Shippensburg took a 7-3 lead after a decision at 133 and a major decision from Cameron Throckmorton at 141.
But
Nico Demetrio turned the momentum in Millersville's favor at 149 pounds and his win came in thrilling fashion. Demetrio and Mike Springer were deadlocked at 3-3 entering the third period so Demetrio chose the bottom position to start. Springer locked up Demetrio and accumulated his one minute of riding time and guaranteed fourth point. Springer nearly rode out Demetrio, but with nine seconds on the clock, Demetrio wriggled free to tie the match at 4-4. Demetrio was the aggressor in the sudden victory period and 31 seconds in, he connected on a shot and scored two points for a 6-4 decision.
Runke put Millersville back into the lead and improved to 6-1 with his second major decision of the season, topping Mark Lentz, 13-1. Shannon extended the lead. After scoring a reversal in each of the first two periods, Shannon took Abner Thompson to the mat and landed the fall at the 4:15 mark.
Â
Shippensburg answered with a Luke Etter fall at 174. Etter led 12-4 late in the third and was in line for the major decision but managed to pin
Shane Gilmore just inside the edge of the mat as time ticked away.
Kyle Narber pushed Millersville's lead back to six points with a 7-2 decision over Hunter Fenk. Shippensburg closed the gap at 197 pounds in a rematch of last season's Super Region 1 third-place match. Jalal Paige kept Millersville's
Aram Moffitt from advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships last season with a 2-1 sudden victory win. Moffitt could not score revenge Wednesday, falling by a 7-3 decision. Â
Wertz, however, delivered for the Marauders, giving the team a 1-0 start in PSAC dual competition. Millersville next travels for a tri-meet against Penn State Mont Alto and Thaddeus Stevens on Dec. 3.
