Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team suffered a heart breaking 1-0 loss Saturday night to Mercyhurst. The only goal scored on the evening occurred because of a questionable call inside the penalty box that resulted in a converted penalty shot attempt by the Lakers. With the win, Mercyhurst improves to 9-2-0 and 3-1-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. Millersville falls to 2-8-1 and 1-3-1 in the PSAC.
Mercyhurst was generally able to control the pace of play in the 1st half as they ended up recording 11 shots to Millersville's one. The dagger occurred in the 43rd minute of play when a Marauder defender slid into Danny Deakin inside the penalty box. The slide tackle appeared to be clean but Deakin was still awarded a penalty kick which he converted for his fifth goal of the season. Going into halftime Mercyhurst would hold its 1-0 lead.
Coming out of the break the Marauders were able to record six shots, with the most dangerous occurring on a
Jesse Zimmerman attempt. The freshman forward received a pass that left him one-on-one in open field versus the Laker goalkeeper who ended up sliding into Zimmerman resulting in a yellow card for Ryan Arvin and a free kick from 30-yards out. Millersville failed to convert and the score held 1-0 through regulation.
Redshirt junior
Kohl Orner received the start between the pipes for the Marauders, and he was rock solid throughout finishing the contest with seven saves.
Millersville looks to rebound from the tough loss Wednesday, October 8 when it hosts Shippensburg University in a must win matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
