Millersville Depth Chart |
Lock Haven Depth ChartGAME OVERVIEW• Millersville travels to Lock Haven Saturday in search of its first win after an 0-7 start. The Marauders most recently played East Stroudsburg tough through the first half but was slowed in the second half when quarterback
Matt Misley left with an injury. The Marauders trailed 14-13 at the half, and Misley was 6-for-8 with 70 yards, a TD pass and a TD rush before he exited the game. Millersville managed just 101 yards of offense in the second half.
• The Marauders just faced a brutally difficult stretch of the schedule in which its last five opponents own a combined 28-7 record. Three of Millersville's final four games, however, are on the road. All four opponents have sub-.500 records and three (Lock Haven, Cheyney and Edinboro) have combined for two wins.
• Since scoring 44 points in the season opener, Millersville has not scored more than two touchdowns in any game since--an average of 10.0 points over the last six games. The top feature of Millersville's offense is its run game which averages 140.9 yards per game, ranking ninth in the PSAC. Three Marauders rank in the top 30 in the PSAC in rushing yards per game. Quarterback
Matt Misley has the fourth-fewest attempts of any QB in the league. While Misley has thrown eight picks, six of those came in a two-game stretch against Kutztown and Bloomsburg when he had only 24 total attempts. Outside of those two games, Misley is 63-for-127 with 10 touchdown passes, two interceptions and 184 yards rushing.

SERIES HISTORY• Millersville and Lock Haven did not meet from 1959-1996 but has played seven times since with the Marauders winning six of those games. Lock Haven holds a 9-17-1 edge in the all-time series but Lock Haven won 16 games between 1928 and 1959. Lock Haven scored its first win in the series since 1959 last year when it defeated Millersville 26-14 at Biemesderfer Stadium. Millersville had to use three quarterbacks and each one threw an interception. Lock Haven scored 10 points in the final six seconds of the first half to take a 13-0 lead into the half. Millersville won its last trip to Hubert Jack Stadium in 2011, 21-20. Four current Marauders played in that 2011 game.
Reggie Slaton and
T.J. Richardson combined for six tackles on defense.
Brent Collins had two rushes for 10 yards, and
David Coates totaled 91 kick return yards on four returns.
SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES• Lock Haven may be 1-6 but it has kept games close. Two of its losses came by five points, and its defense has limited opponents to 27 or less in four games. The Bald Eagles pitched a shutout against Cheyney last week and now ranks eighth in the PSAC in scoring defense. The defense is led by George Christas, who ranks seventh in the PSAC with 63 tackles. Tony Balloon ranks 10th with 60 tackles. Daniel Strawbridge ranks sixth in the PSAC with three interceptions. Christas has two picks as well.
• The Lock Haven offense ranks 14th in scoring at 19.3 points per game. It's offense is balanced with 226.7 passing yards and 104.0 rushing yards per game. Beau Swales is the team's leading rusher but averages just 3.3 yards per carry. Quarterback Caleb Walton has thrown a PSAC-leading 10 interceptions. His top target is David Cook with 37 catches for 404 yards and four touchdowns.
EARLY IMPACT• Coach
Greg Breitbach's first recruiting class is certainly making a positive impact right away. Wide receivers
Kevin Wiggins and
Malont'a Patterson lead the team in receptions and touchdowns and both players have generated at least one play of more than 40 yards.
• Wiggins leads the team in catches with 24 and has also made four touchdown catches. Patterson has 258 yards receiving and 94 yards rushing, totaling 7.2 yards per carry with four total touchdowns. Fellow freshman wide receiver
Evan Brooks recently received his first career start. Left tackle
Matt Von Neida will also crack the starting lineup for the first time this week, giving Millersville four true freshmen starters on offense. Millersville has also had three true freshmen starters on defense. Against Bloomsburg, running back
Phil Vass made his collegiate debut and led the team with 52 yards on 11 carries but missed the following game with an injury. On defense, freshman outside linebacker
Logan Kinser ranks fourth on the team with 31 tackles.
Sene Polamalu (23) and
Byron Ragland (17) have also been active from the linebacker spot.
• There are a total of 13 true freshmen listed on Millersville's depth chart.
INSIDE JOB• Senior inside linebacker
Reggie Slaton is the Marauders' most productive defender, piling up 77 tackles, which ranks second in the PSAC, just two behind Cheyney's Isaiah Fleming. Slaton also ranks 22nd in Division II. He recorded a career-high of 15 in the season opener and has since totaled double-digit stops in six of seven games. He is on pace to finish with 121 tackles, which would be the most by a Marauder since Tim Naylor's 148 in 1992. Since 1997, only two players--Lee Rizzotto and Braden Steffy--have totaled 100 tackles in a season.
CAREER DAY• The Marauders have dealt with significant injury problems at running back.
Myron Myles has missed nearly three full games and
Phil Vass and
Evander Barkley have also been limited in recent weeks. The team has turned to
David Coates, who responded with a career game against East Stroudsburg. Coates totaled 20 rushes for 85 yards--both career highs. Coates has received double-digit carries just twice this season but has averaged 4.3 yards per tote in those games.
SANELLI'S STREAK• Center
Lenny Sanelli is becoming Millersville's Iron Man. He has started all 29 games since stepping on campus as a freshman in 2011. He started at tackle during his first season and moved to center as a sophomore. He has started 18 consecutive games at center.
JUST FOR THE RECORD•
David Coates has already set Millersville career records for return yards and return attempts in a season and a career. Coates leads all NCAA football players regardless of Division in total kickoff return yards (2,868) and kickoff returns (130). He ranks fourth in all divisions and first in Division II in yards per game (73.5). He is the only Division II player ranked in the top 25. Coates now needs only seven kick returns to set the all-time Division II record and is 397 yards away from snapping the career record of 3,265 set by Fairmont State's Zack Page from 207-10.
