Box Score Buckhannon, W.V. - The Millersville men's soccer team faced its first road test of 2013 in West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon. The Marauders trailed in the second half, but a goal by sophomore
Jeramey Robbins tied the game and resuled in a 1-1 conclusion.
Millersville (1-0-1) totaled 16 shots in the game, putting eight on goal. Robbins' score was his second of the year, while classmate
Ben Johnston had the assist for his second point of 2013.
Brad Benzing had one save for the Marauders as the starting goalkeeper.
W.Va. Wesleyan (1-0-1) only created five shots against a stingy Marauder defense. Jordan Halpern notched the Bobcats' only score, knocking home his shot in the 15th minute for his second goal of the year. Goalie Derek Ayers stopped seven Marauder targets.
In a game dominated mostly by the Marauders, the Bobcats frustration showed through as they gathered six yellow cards and a red card. Bobcat midfielder Thomas Capstick received his red card in the 58th minute, and Robbins was able to score just seven minutes later.
With the game tied at one after regulation, the Marauders were eager to place a shot in the back of the net and end the game on a golden goal.
Just 20 seconds into the first overtime Millersville forced a corner. Johnston played the ball in and senior
Andrew Dukes fired a shot on frame, but it was thwarted by Ayers.
In the 97th minute a foul and yellow card by the Bobcats in the box gave the Marauders a penalty kick and great chance to score and end the match. Senior and captain
Colby Zeger took the free shot, but again Ayers came up huge for Wesleyan saving the shot and preserving the tie.
In the overtime periods Millersville took seven corners to the Bobcats zero and outshot Wesleyan 4-1.
The Marauders return to Millersville on Sept. 11, to compete against Holy Family. First touch is slated for 4 p.m.
