Box Score Erie, Pa. - Millersville men's soccer wasn't about to repeat the results of its 2012 trip to Erie. Instead, the Marauders scored a 2-1 victory over No. 12-ranked Mercyhurst Saturday to complete the weekend sweep of the Erie programs.
Last season's back-to-back against Gannon and Mercyhurst (6-3, 1-1 PSAC) resulted in two losses by a combined 6-0 score. Millersville (5-2-1, 2-0 PSAC) turned the tables this time around with back-to-back 2-1 triumphs. The wins not only pushed the Marauder to the front of the pack in the PSAC but were also much-needed after they suffered back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked teams Wilmington and LIU Post a week ago.
Saturday's win came in come-from-behind fashion, and sophomore
Ben Johnston had a foot in both the game-tying and game-winning goals for the second day in a row.
Danny Deakin gave Mercyhurst lead just 11:41 into the match, but
Christopher Sosa headed a Johnston corner kick past Mikko Sarkkinen 3:09 later.
The score remained knotted until the 61st minute when Johnston untied it with a scored on a corner kick. Holding a 2-1 advantage, Millersville turned to
Brad Benzing and its defense. Mercyhurst cranked nine shots in the second period and all four placed on goal were turned away by Benzing.
Mercyhust challenged Benzing three times in the final 11 minutes. Deakin's last-ditch effort at the 88:35 mark was denied as well.
Johnston boosted his season totals to three goals and five assists. He recorded a goal and an assist in both games on the weekend.
Jaime Vazquez tallied three shots including two on goal.
Millersville is now 5-2 under Coach Steven Widdowson in regular season games played in Erie.
The Marauders are in the midst of a four-match road trip that continues on Oct. 2 at Shippensburg.
