East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team opened its 2013-14 campaign Sunday at the ESU Open. Six Marauders won at least two matches, and the group was led by newcomer Aram Moffitt, who went 4-2 at 197 pounds.
Moffitt, a redshirt freshman, recorded four decisions and pushed further in his bracket than any other Marauder on the day. Moffitt started with a 4-2 win over Zach Goldrosen of The College of New Jersey. He then earned another decision by a 3-2 score, before dropping his first match by a fall. He bounced back with a 4-1 win over Kutztown's Joshua Alpha in the consolation bracket. His 4-1 tiebreaker win over Rutgers' Padric Lynch advanced him to within one win of the fifth-place match. Instead, he was pinned by Brown's Augustus Marker.
Fellow 197-pounder Ryan Nielsen won a pair of matches. He opened with an 11-9 sudden victory win over Bloomsburg's Noah Santiago and a 2-1 win over SUNY Sullivan's Joshua Bonneau before his day ended with back-to-back losses.
The Marauders sent a contingent of three 125 pounders to the event, and freshman Austin Camacci led the group with three wins. Cammaci's day started slowly with an 8-0 loss, but he notched an 8-6 sudden victory win over Jeremy Schwartz of Penn in the consolation bracket, and then pickedd up a 10-2 major decision against Sacred Heart's Joe Harris. Camacci moved on with an 11-5 decision over East Stroudsburg's Connor Maliff before being eliminated.
Sam Oberlanded also dropped his first match at 125 pounds but won two matches by fall. His first came at 1:34 and his second came at the 6:55 mark.
141-pound David Charles went 2-2 on the day with both wins coming in the consolation bracket in the form of a 12-2 major decision and 5-1 decision.
Austin Wenzlaff started his day in impressive fashion. He won his first match by a 15-0 technical fall, and then blanked Penn's Daniel McDevitt in a 12-0 major decision to advance to the championship quarterfinals. He suffered a 16-7 loss to Centenary's Joshua Sibbles and was then eliminated with a 10-1 loss in his first match in the consolation round.
Millersville opens its PSAC dual schedule on Nov. 26 at Shippensburg.
