Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team gave up two goals in the final 10 minutes of play and lost 2-0 to West Chester on Saturday evening.
Millersville (7-3-2, 4-1 PSAC) was the last unbeaten team in conference play before the loss to the Golden Rams. For only the second time this year the Marauders did not take more shots than their opponent. West Chester (6-3-2, 5-1-1 PSAC) took 19 shots compared to 11 targets by the home team.
Through the first 80 minutes of play neither team was able to solve their opponents defense. In the 81st minute Golden Ram forward Conor Malarney broke the scoreless tie.
Malarney beat a Marauder defender to the ball in transition, collected the ball after a scrum at the top of the box and fired an 18-yard shot just passed the diving reach of
Brad Benzing.
Less than four minutes later West Chester responded again. This time Malarney had a rebound off of teammate Kevin McCann's shot come right towards him. The forward headed the ball into the right side of the goal frame, scoring his second goal of the game and giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
The Black and Gold had plenty of threats of their own, but each time they were thwarted by Golden Ram goalie Ryan Shultz. Millersville's best chance came with 12 minutes left in regulation. Shultz came off of his line on a cross and the ball sailed towards the back side. Sophomore
Jaime Vazquez headed a shot right towards the lower left 90, but a diving save by Shultz kept the Marauders off the board.
Vazquez lead Millersville with six shots, placing three on the goal frame. Benzing made four saves in the loss.
The shutout marks the first time this season that Millersville has failed to score in a game. It is also just the fourth time in the past two years that the offense hasn't been able to find the back of the net.
Millersville returns to Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium for their next game on Wednesday against Bloomsburg. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
