
Wenzlaff Top Finisher for Marauders at Wilkes Open

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - Freshman Austin Wenzlaff placed sixth to lead a host of Marauder wrestlers at the 80th-annual Wilkes Open Friday.
Wenzlaff, wrestling at 165 pounds, won his first three matches before falling to eventual runner-up Grayson Shepperd of Princeton. Wenzlaff scored two first-round falls and also registered a 7-0 decision in the championship bracket before falling 9-4 to Shepherd. Wenzlaff never had an opportunity to advance in the consolation bracket, though, as he was forced to take a medical forfeit in both the consolation semifinals and the fifth-place match.
Freshman 141-pounder David Charles notched a pair of victories, winning his first round match against Michael Gowen of Virginia Tech by a 12-2 major decision. In the consolation bracket, Charles scored a fall at 6:42 over Wilkes' Jeff Peterson.
The Marauders have four wrestlers competing in the 149-pound bracket. Brock Thompson earned a first-round, 16-0 technical fall against Messiah's Greg Kabakjian. Josh Ruppert scored a pin at 52 seconds in the consolation bracket, and Aaron Trimpey won his first match with a pin at 5:30.
Zach Wawrzyniak-Bush, wrestling at 157 pounds, earned a 4-0 decision in his match and advanced with a 5-2 decision before dropping to matches in a row.
Millersville hosts its first dual meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 5 against Pitt-Johnstown. The match is schedule to start at 12 p.m.
