East Stroudsburg, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team started its 2012-13 campaign Saturday in the East Stroudsburg Open. Three different Marauders won multiple matches.
Freshman Austin Wenzlaff, wrestling at 165 pounds, was off to a quick start to his Marauder career until he was slowed by an injury and forced to take medical forfeits. He won his first match over Old Dominion's Tanner Tinsley with a pin at the 4:48 mark.
Wenzlaff stayed in the winners bracket with a 13-9 win over Zach Zotollo of the College of New Jersey. But Wenzlaff's run ended there as he bowed out with an injury.
149-pound Brock Thompson started fast as well, winning his first two bouts. He topped Lehigh's Michael Stepien by an 8-4 decision, and then won 7-6 in the tiebreaker round against Kutztown's Mitch Voelker. He was pinned by Virginia's Gus Sako, and in the consolation round, he advanced on a medical forfeit but lost in his next match to North Carolina's Derek Golner.
Freshman Kyle Loeb, wrestling at 133 pounds, notched his first collegiate win in his first career match. He pinned East Stroudsburg's Zak Jones at the 3:59 mark. He also scored a win in the consolation bracket with a pin in 59 seconds against teammate Thomas Nulty.
Millersville, competing in its first season at Division II, starts its PSAC dual schedule on Nov. 28 at Shippensburg. Each Division II program that belongs to the PSAC will wrestle a round robin schedule to determine a regular season team champion for the first time.
