Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville athletic department and its athletic teams are making a difference in the community. Earlier Friday, Marauder representatives involved with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) delivered non-perishable foods that SAAC members have been collecting over the last month and a half to the Water Street Rescue Mission in Lancaster.
Representing Millersville Athletics and the SAAC program were Jess Jones (Co-Chair of SAAC and lacrosse team) and Sarah Mulvey (cross country). SAAC's program is designed to help Division II College athletes maintain a voice across campus and establish a connection with other sports teams at their school.
The SAAC at Millersville is made up of two or three student-athletes from each of the 22 intercollegiate teams. SAAC is designed to improve campus life for all student-athletes, as well as contribute in and around the community. Whether hosting camps for kids or participating in fundraisers, the members of SAAC always look to make their voices heard and better life for others.
“SAAC provides our student-athletes with the opportunity to have a voice in our athletic department and also involving numerous community service and engagement opportunities,” Associate Athletic Director Steve Roach said. Roach also says that the program can help students even after they graduate, because the student-athletes “have an appreciation for working in and giving back to the community.”
SAAC's biggest contribution work nationwide comes in the form of donating to and raising money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. All of the committees in Division II schools across the country have combined to raise upwards of $1.5 million so far for the cause, with Millersville being one of the top donors in the PSAC.
Associate Director of the Water Street Mission in Lancaster Keith Shutter was very thankful for SAAC's donation. He said they will use the gift to help feed homeless men and women on Thanksgiving Day.
Water Street Ministries is a Lancaster County-based organization that provides help for the homeless. In addition to fostering homeless men, women and children with food and shelter, Water Street Ministries also helps these people discover how they arrived in their state of need. By posing challenges and questions to them, Water Street Ministries can figure out what choices or patterns of behavior brought their clients to their current condition.
