Millersville Falls to Bellarmine in Double Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score

Erie, Pa. – Bellarmine's Rachael Walz scored a goal off a corner from Ellen West five minutes into double overtime to hand Millersville a heartbreaking 2-1 non-conference loss Saturday afternoon at Tulio Field. The Marauders finished the weekend with 1-1 and had their record evened at 2-2 on the year.

The two clubs exchanged goals just 41 seconds apart in the first half. It was the game's only scores until the second overtime. Melissa McCarthy notched the first goal 13:02 into action off of a Champayne Hess assist to give Millersville the lead.

The Knights' (3-0) Ellen West found Natalie Perry shortly after to tie the score at 1-1.  Bellarmine edged the Marauders in shots and corners both by 6-5 margins.

Millersville came out of halftime with a burst of energy, tallying the period's first seven shots to the Knights' one. Neither team could find the back of the cage, however, forcing the contest into overtime. The Black and Gold out-shot Bellarmine 8-5 in second-period play and registered nine corners to the Knights' five.

Bellarmine goalkeeper Samantha Biedron saw most of the first overtime's action, recording three saves in the 15-minute period. Millersville combined for five corners and nine shots, while the Knights recorded one in each category.

Walz, the only Bellarmine player to register more than one shot (five overall) knocked in a goal off of a corner pass from West just over 10 minutes into the second overtime and stunned the Marauder defense. Walz's goal was the lone shot of the overtime period for both clubs and West's assist was the second of the contest.

Biedron turned aside eight shots on goal for the Knights throughout the 90 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sara Dickinson recorded four saves for Millersville. McCarthy and Ashley Weber combined for half of the team's 22 shots on goal. Mercedes Grubb tallied three shots and Paige Morrison contributed two.

The Marauders host Slippery Rock on Saturday, Sept. 18 for their home opener. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
