Box Score
Millersville, Pa. — Freshman forward
Andrew Dukes banged home three goals for his first collegiate hat trick and the 18th-ranked Millersville men's soccer team stormed past Lock Haven 4-2 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at Chryst Field on Saturday night.
The Marauders (2-1, 1-1 PSAC) were none too happy about dropping their conference opener to nationally-ranked Slippery Rock this past Wednesday, and early on in Saturday's game they were none too happy with their start, either. Ricky Domico took a Terence Gochera cross and put it past
Matt Langione at 11:43 to give the Bald Eagles (2-3, 1-1 PSAC) a 1-0 lead.
Backed by a strong crowd which was there to take in the program's 50th anniversary celebration, Millersville answered in a big way. Dukes sandwiched goals around an
Eric Pepper rocket to give the Marauders three goals in less than five minutes. Dukes would net his first of the evening off of a set piece. Fellow rookie
Colby Zeger served a ball into the box that found
Matt Kadoch. Kadoch was able to head the ball over to the near post where Dukes finished with ease. Kadoch's helper was his team-leading third of the season.
Pepper, known more for his strong defensive play in the midfield, was an unlikely scoring source on the goal that gave the Black and Gold its first lead of the night. His shot off a free kick from about 25 yards out found the upper right corner of the net to make it 2-1. The goal was Pepper's first since scoring the overtime winner against Philadelphia back on Aug. 29, 2008 —his freshman year.
Dukes made a dazzling move to get free for his second marker. He juked a Lock Haven defender before skipping a shot along the ground to the far right corner of the net past the lunging arms of Bald Eagles' goalkeeper Zach Hubler.
Millersville would tack on a fourth goal just after halftime, courtesy of Dukes once again. A hard foul in the box gave the freshman a penalty kick opportunity that he converted exactly a minute into the period. Dukes now has four goals in three games to pace the Marauders.
Lock Haven would finish off the scoring with a goal from Martin Pletz at 49:23. Pletz was able to gather a ball in a mess of people and beat a helpless Langione.
The win takes Millersville's unbeaten streak to 14 games, dating back to 2008. The Marauders are 13-0-1 in that span. Despite giving up the first goal on Saturday, Millersville dominated the shot totals coming up with 13 against Lock Haven's three. Hubler made four saves for the visitors, while Langione recorded one for MU.
Millersville returns to the field Wednesday night with a non-conference match against Wilmington (Del.) at 7:30 p.m. at Chryst Field. The Marauders play their next three contests on their home turf.
