Marauders Nipped by Wilmington, 8-7

Box Score

Wilmington, Del. - Millersville's lineup showed little signs of rust following an eight-day lay-off, but Wilmington overpowered the Marauders' bullpen and sent the visitors to an 8-7 defeat Wednesday afternoon.

Millersville (5-8) hasn't been able to find its rhythm because of the poor weather and cancellations. Since March 8, the Marauders have had a total of eight games canceled or moved to a later date, and it has shown up in the loss column as the Marauders have dropped four in a row--three of them by just one run.

Tuesday's defeat also marked the third time Millersville has lost after leading after five innings. Wilmington (8-4) tagged the Marauder bullpen for a total of six runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but a Millersville comeback was halted by J.T. Gregory's third save after a pinch-hit, three-run homer from Ryan Chesler in the top of the ninth.

Seven different Marauders tallied at least one hit, and Corey Phelan and Derek Kline each had two. Kline hit his team-leading fourth homer of the year when he led off the fourth inning.

Millersville starter Kyle Belanchik worked his way through four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks. Kline's homer, Adam Boyd's RBI single and Chris Edgar's score on a wild pitch sparked a three-run fourth inning and gave Belanchick a 3-2 lead when he exited the game.

Jason E. Long pitched a shutout fifth but allowed one in the sixth on a Mike Goodwin home run and two more in the seventh on three hits. Wilmington's big inning put the Marauders behind for good, and freshman Chris Whitman didn't fare any better, giving up three runs in his one inning of work.

Ryan Lally, who held Millersville to one run in four innings, picked up his first win of the year. Wilmington's pitchers totaled 12 strikeouts.

Junior Ryan McCormick pushed his hitting streak to six games with a single.

The Marauders host its PSAC East opener Friday against Mansfield. Game time is 12 p.m. Live audio will be provided on MSBN.
