Marauders Set to Challenge at PSAC Cross Country Championships (Video)
11/4/2010 2:01:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's and women's cross country teams travel to California, Pa., Saturday for the PSAC Championships. Led by a strong core of veteran runners, both of the teams expect its strongest finish in years.
The women's squad placed sixth last year with Priscilla Jennings finishing as the runner-up. Jennings graduated, but Elicia Anderson has stepped right into her shoes. Senior Emily Francisco and junior Rebekah Moore have helped the Marauders to a No. 18 national ranking.
Three teams in the PSAC rank ahead of the Marauders in the poll, but Millersville has placed in the top three of two meets this year. Millersville has not finished better than fifth since 2001.
Anderson, Francisco and Moore should all contend for All-PSAC honors (top 20 finish). Along with Shippensburg's Neely Spence and Mary Dell, Anderson is among the fastest runners in the PSAC. In two meets against the Ship duo, Anderson has finished third and trailed Dell by a total of nine seconds.
Millersville's competition for the team crown is defending champion Shippensburg, Edinboro, Kutztown and East Stroudsburg. All four teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA National Rankings, but Millersville has finished higher than Kutztown in competition this year.
The Millersville men have no lack of experience. Seniors Jim Boyer, Joshua Foulds and Zach Kelchner are making their fourth trip to the championship event. All three runners redshirted last year, but Boyer was the team's No. 2 finisher at the championship two years ago. Juniors Michael Parker and Jared Kneebone and redshirt freshman Seth Hibbs have also cracked the team's top five at times this season.
Millersville's strongest contender for All-PSAC honors, however, is sophomore James McBride. After sitting out the 2009 season with a hip injury, McBride has returned better than ever and has led the Marauders in every race this season. He has finished no lower than 12th in the team's five races.
The men's team has finished third or better 16 times since 1958 but has not finished better than seventh since 2004. It took 11th last year.
With a No. 6 national ranking, Shippensburg appears to be the team favorite. The Red Raiders, however, have never won a team crown and must knock off perennial contenders Edinboro and Lock Haven. Since 1984, the Fighting Scots and Bald Eagles have combined to win 25-of-26 championships.
The women's race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., and the men's will follow at 11 a.m.
