Shepherdstown, W.Va. – It wasn't until the 39th minute in Sunday afternoon's game against Wheeling Jesuit that the Millersville women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie. But after freshman Kayla Hartley scored on an assist from classmate Taylor Suskie, the flood gates opened and the Marauders scored four more goals to notch a 5-1 win.
Hartley finished the contest with a career-high three goals, becoming the first Marauder to score three in a game since Melissa Cameron performed the feat against Shepherd on Oct. 13, 2005. Hartley now has a team-best five goals, which already tops the 2007 team-leading total (Madison Vogel with four).
Not to be outdone, Suskie scored her first career goal in the 51st minute and added another assist on an Ariel Gehringer goal late in the contest to total four points in the game.
The Marauders peppered Wheeling Jesuit keeper Lauren Lewicki with 23 shots, including 13 in the second half alone. Lewicki managed 10 saves, but in just five minutes and 40 seconds, the Marauders blew open a tight contest and turned it into a 4-1 rout.
Hartley scored her second goal on an assist from Niki Roberts at 49:40. Wheeling Jesuit answered one minute later, but Suskie scored unassisted at 52:27 to retake the lead for Millersville. In the 53rd minute, Hartley completed the hat trick, a Gehringer's goal at 89:09 provided plenty of insurance.
Senior goalkeeper Jaime Lancaster made six saves while surrendering just one goal.
With the win, the Marauders improve to 4-2 overall, matching the program's 2007 win total. It is the best start of Mike O'Brien's three-year tenure and the best by a Millersville team since starting 2004 5-1.
In 2006, Millersville totaled nine goals and in 2007, it scored 19 times. Through six games in 2008, Millersville has 16 goals.
Millersville returns to Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium--where it is 3-0--and resumes PSAC Eastern Division play Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
