Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville men's soccer team will begin their run for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title on Wednesday, Nov. 5 when it plays host to the Warriors of East Stroudsburg in a semifinal contest. Game time is 1 p.m. from Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The Marauders (15-2, 10-0 PSAC East), who are ranked No. 6 in the nation, enter the playoffs coming off an unbeaten campaign in divisional play, capturing the Eastern Division crown for the first time since 1990. The PSAC returned to a divisional alignment this season for the first time since the 1992 season.
The Marauders are making their second consecutive tournament appearance. Last season, the Marauders entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, losing to No. 2 seed Lock Haven by a score of 3-0.
Millersville is led by seniors
Sean McLaughlin and
Ryan Kiley. The duo has combined for 20 of the team's 49 goals this season. McLaughlin is ranked 5th in the PSAC with 12 goals on the season.
The Marauders also have a steady goalkeeper in sophomore
Matt Langione. Langione has allowed just 14 goals out of 134 shots faced on the season.
East Stroudsburg is no stranger to the Marauders. The Marauders handed the Warriors their only defeats in divisional play by scores of 4-1 at East Stroudsburg on Sept. 24, and 2-0 at Millersville on Oct. 28.
The Warriors, who are the two-time defending PSAC Tournament champions, are led by Roshane Ellison, whose 17 goals this season are tied for the conference lead. Goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa has recorded five shutouts this season.
The winner of the Millersville/East Stroudsburg contest will play host to the winner of the Western final between top-seeded California (Pa.) and second-seeded Slippery Rock. The championship game will be played on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Marauders lost to Slippery Rock, 2-1 on Sept. 27, and defeated California (Pa.) 3-2 on Oct. 4.
About the Teams
Millersville: The Marauders are making their second tournament appearance in a row and third since 2002. They have won three division titles in their history (1970, 1990, 2008), and set a school record for victories this season with 15. Marauder players have been named PSAC Eastern Division Athletes of the week five times this season.
East Stroudsburg: The Warriors are the two-time defending champions, and have won 13 of the past 16 crowns. Head coach Jerry Sheska has won 15 PSAC titles in his 26 years as head coach, and has had a winning record every year since 1983. Roshane Ellison is tied for the conference lead in goals with 17.
California (Pa.): The Vulcans are making their first appearance in the PSAC Tournament since 2005. Mike Luecke is tied for the conference lead in goals with 17. He has accounted for nearly one-third of the Vulcan scoring output this season.
Slippery Rock: The Rock is in the tournament for the third time in four years, and is looking to win their first conference crown since 2005. Jeremy Deighton leads the team in goals with 14.
