Walter Waetjen was a star tackle for the Millersville State Teachers College in the early 1940s. He played on the undefeated and untied 1940 team that was 7-0-0. Waetjen was named the outstanding senior athlete in 1942.
In 1939, he was the Golden Gloves light heavyweight boxing champion. From 1942 to 1946, Waetjen played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles.
He received a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts in 1942. He went on received a master’s from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 and his doctorate in 1951 from the University of Maryland.
