Induction Speech

The voice of Richard Frerichs is familiar to Marauder fans, but for more than 40 years, he’s worked tirelessly and selflessly behind the scenes for the betterment of Millersville University and its athletics department. Frerichs, a 1964 graduate, is best known as the “Voice of the Marauders.” From 1970 to the present day, he’s served as the public address announcer for football games at Biemesderfer Stadium, and he’s served in the same role for women’s basketball games since 1983.

His impact on Millersville University extends far beyond the microphone, however. The recipient of the Millersville University Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award in 2010, first served as the assistant dean of men and assistant track and field and cross country coach in 1968.

Frerichs served on Millersville’s Faculty Student Athletic Committee from 1983-2002 and was the chair from 1997-2001. He assisted in the creation of the athletic hall of fame, chaired the hall of fame committee from 1997-2002 and has served as the master of ceremonies for the induction ceremony.

His dedication to Millersville Athletics has only increased since his retiring as professor emeritus of the department of educational foundations in 2004. He chaired the Blue Ribbon Task Force in 2008, currently serves as the chair of the Athlete Fundraising Council, and for the last year, he volunteered with the marketing department, selling advertising and sponsorships to raise money for athletic scholarships.

Frerichs became the dean of men in 1970, and in 1972 he became the dean of resident life, overseeing both male and female students and residence halls. He also served as the assistant director of financial aid before moving to the faculty. He retired as the chair of the department of educational foundations. He was the president of Millersville Alumni Association from 2007-09.

Frerichs earned a master’s in education degree from Millersville in 1969 and his Ed.D. from the University of Delaware in 1995. Presently, he serves as president of Penn Manor School Board and the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, and is the chair of the alumni engagement committee at Millersville. Frerichs and his late wife Marsha have two daughters, Kimberlee and Melissa.
