Mike Burke, the first quarterback of the Dr. Gene Carpenter coaching era, was a record-setting quarterback during his varsity career. He received NAIA All-America honorable mention and was named to the All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team in 1973. Burke led the ‘Ville to wins in 20 of his last 23 varsity starts. He received the MU Football Alumni Award in 1985.
At his time of graduation in 1975, Burke held MU career records for passing yards (3,716), completions (270), attempts (543) and touchdown passes (42). He threw for five touchdowns in a single game vs. Bloomsburg in 1973 and also set season marks for passing yards (1,141) and 15 touchdown passes that season. During his senior year, Burke led PSAC East in passing and total offense.
From 1985 until his retirement in 2003, Burke had an exceptional career as head football coach at Columbia High School, compiling a 129-56-3 overall record with 18 winning seasons. He led the Crimson Tide to the most wins in a season (11 in 2001), three Lancaster-League Section Three titles, one PIAA District three title, 10 district playoff appearances and one PIAA state playoff berth. In 1995, 1998 and 2001, Burke was selected Lancaster-Lebanon League Coach of the Year and Columbia High School dedicated its yearbook in his honor in 1999.
In his full-time occupation, Mike is distribution center coordinator with Yellow Transportation, Inc., located in East Petersburg, Pa.
