Whether it was scoring, distributing to teammates, grabbing rebounds or playing stifling defense, Mashira Newman impacted every facet of the game. She is the only player in the long and distinguished history of the Millersville women’s basketball program to finish her career ranked in the top 10 in points, assists, steals and blocks. Newman is the only Marauder to total 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
A three-time All-PSAC East selection and two-time first team pick, Newman helped the Marauders to 84 wins in her career, and as a freshman, she served as the starting point guard for a team that won the PSAC East and reached the NCAA Atlantic Regional title game. Newman ranks fifth in career scoring with 1,428 points, averaging 12.3 points per game over her 116 games played—the second-most of any Marauder. Her 507 assists (4.4 per game) rank second, and she ranks third in steals with 399 (3.4 per game). Despite playing guard and standing 5-7, Newman still blocked 107 shots, a total that ranks 10th all-time.
Remarkably consistent, Newman averaged double figures in points all four seasons, totaled over 100 steals three times, and averaged at least 4.8 assists per game in each of her final three seasons. Newman made an immediate impact for a veteran 2009-10 team. She started each of the team’s final 13 games and ranked second on the team in scoring. She became the first Marauder with more than 100 steals in nearly a decade and ranked sixth in the NCAA with 107. Her 101 free throws broke a 20-year-old Millersville freshman record. In the Marauders’ two memorable NCAA Tournament wins, she averaged 13.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, even tallying a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in the second round win over California.
Newman landed All-PSAC East Second Team honors in 2010-11 after leading the league and ranking third in Division II in steals and ranking 10th in the league in scoring at 14.7 points per game. As a junior, she ranked fourth in the PSAC in assists, fifth in blocks and 11th in minutes per game and earned All-PSAC East First Team honors. She repeated that performance in 2012-13, leading the PSAC with 4.8 assists per game and ranking second in the league with 3.7 steals per game. She ranked in the top three on the team in scoring, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks and minutes played.
Newman graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in social work.
